Stand Builder Selection Criteria for InnoTrans Berlin

July 17, 2026

InnoTrans is a genuinely different kind of show to build for. Held every two years across all halls at the Berlin exhibition grounds, plus an outdoor and track display area, it asks more of a stand builder than a typical trade fair. The criteria below are weighted to reflect what actually matters most when shortlisting a contractor for this specific show.

Why Structural Experience Comes First

InnoTrans exhibitors frequently need to display large or heavy components, sometimes vehicle sections or infrastructure equipment, which changes the entire structural brief. A contractor without genuine experience supporting this kind of scale is likely to underestimate load calculations, sightline planning and the additional approval time these builds require. This is the single most important filter when shortlisting for this show.

Why Outdoor Coordination Deserves Its Own Line Item

Many InnoTrans exhibitors combine an indoor stand with a vehicle or component presented on the outdoor track. This is a separate logistics exercise from the stand build itself, involving transport of large exhibits and coordination with the show organiser over track allocation. A contractor with no experience in this area may handle the indoor stand well while leaving the outdoor presence poorly coordinated.

Why Technical Presentation Capability Matters More Here Than at Most Shows

A significant share of what InnoTrans exhibitors do, signalling systems, tunnel construction methods, vehicle interiors, cannot be physically brought to the stand. Contractors who can integrate screens and simulations effectively give exhibitors a genuine way to demonstrate this kind of product, rather than relying on graphics and brochures alone.

Questions to Ask Against Each Criterion

Ask for photographs and details of previous stands supporting large or heavy exhibits. Ask how the contractor has handled outdoor track or bus display logistics in the past, including who managed transport and organiser coordination. Ask for examples of technology integration used to explain a product that could not be physically exhibited. Ask who specifically manages the project if both an indoor stand and an outdoor presence are involved. Ask whether the contractor has built at Messe Berlin before and what that experience involved.

Using This as a Scoring Tool

A simple way to apply these weightings practically is to score each shortlisted contractor out of ten against each criterion, multiply by the weighting, and compare totals. This produces a more objective comparison than a general impression from a single sales conversation, particularly for a show where the physical and logistical stakes of getting the wrong contractor are higher than at a standard trade fair.
